Best Hikes in Zion National Park
Having lived in St. George, Utah, for almost a year, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to explore the amazing outdoor activities in the region. One of my favorite parts of my time here is the frequent trips to Zion National Park. Zion is only an hour's drive from St. George Utah and is very accessible for quick day trips or longer hikes. The park has some of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever seen, and I want to share some of the best hikes in Zion National Park I have done so far. This list of hikes in Zion showcases the park’s breathtaking beauty and highlights the unique experiences each has to offer.
Angels Landing
In my opinion, Angels Landing is the best hike in Zion National Park. This trail is famous for its dramatic cliffs and narrow ridges. Hiking Angles Landing is a mental and physical challenge as you have to climb 1,400 feet and then walk on a ridge with 1,400-foot cliffs on each side. The most physically demanding part of the hike is the incline to the chain section because you gain so much elevation so fast. Once you reach the chain section it isn't a physical challenge but you are tested mentally. I am scared of heights and walking on the ridge made me have to push past my fears. Once you reach the top of Angles Landing you get to see one of the best views in Zion National Park. This includes a 360 view of the dramatic landscape in Zion National Park. The views were amazing but finding the ability to push past my fear was my favorite accomplishment from the hike. It’s a tough hike but if you’re up for the challenge, it’s an unforgettable experience. Just a heads up, to Hike Angels Landing you will need to enter the lottery on the Zion National Park website . It is a pretty easy princess and you will find all the information you need on their website.
The Narrows
I think the second best hike in Zion National Park is The Narrows. The hike is one of the most unique hikes I have ever done. You’ll be hiking right through the Virgin River, surrounded by towering canyon walls. I hiked about four miles into the Narrows and then four miles back, and the experience was amazing. Whether you want to do the full hike or just a shorter section, it’s worth getting your feet wet for the stunning views. I have done part of the hike two times and we have found it is best to do the narrows during warm weather. The water is a great way to escape the brutal Southern Utah heat but can get cold in chilly weather. The deepest the water got on the section we did was roughly waist to lower chest height but you will be walking in the Virgin River for almost the entire hike. The Narrows is one of the best hikes in Zion National Park and I highly recommend it.
Scouts Lookout
For those who want to skip the most intense part of Angels Landing (the chain section) or did not win the lottery then Scouts Lookout is a fantastic alternative. This spot is just before the final chain section on Angels Landing and offers incredible views. I found the views to be better than Angels Landing and you don't have to risk your life. My friends and I find this spot to be a great place to eat lunch and enjoy the scenery. There is another hike that continues past Scouts Lookout which also has amazing views.
Emerald Pools
If you’re looking for an easier hike, Emerald Pools is one of the best hikes in Zion. This trail is great for families or anyone looking for a more laid-back experience. The hike takes you to a series of pools and waterfalls. This hike is not very strenuous and it is one of the best hikes to take your kids on in Zion National Park. With that being said it is very accessible and can get pretty crowded but it’s still a beautiful spot to relax and take in Zion’s natural beauty.
Watchman Trail
The Watchman Trail is another one of my favorites, especially if you’re short on time. It’s a relatively quick hike that starts right at the visitor center and takes you up to a viewpoint with incredible views of Zion Canyon. I’ve found it’s particularly stunning around sunset, so if you’re looking for a shorter hike that still delivers big on scenery, this one is hard to beat. We have done Watchman Trail a few times after shorter hikes or when the shuttle line is very backed up. Every time we enjoy the experience and definitely recommend to anyone looking for a shorter hike in Zion National Park.
Final Thoughts
Zion National Park is truly a treasure of Southern Utah, and these best hikes in Zion National Park have been some of the most memorable experiences of my time here. Whether you’re up for the adrenaline rush of Angels Landing or prefer the tranquility of the Emerald Pools, there’s something for everyone. The park’s diverse landscapes, from towering canyon walls to peaceful rivers and waterfalls, offer endless opportunities to connect with nature. I hope this guide helps you plan your adventures and discover the breathtaking beauty that makes Zion such a special place. No matter which trails you choose, you’re in for an unforgettable experience exploring the best hikes in Zion National Park!
