Location
The Wire Mesa Trailhead is situated at coordinates (37.1332732, -113.0709759), approximately a 50 to 60-minute drive from St. George, Utah. Travel through Hurricane, continue on Highway 59 to Apple Valley, Utah. Beyond Apple Valley, take a sharp left onto Main Street. Follow this road until you see the turnoff for Wire Mesa on your left. The road here becomes somewhat rough, requiring a vehicle with decent clearance. I managed well with a Subaru Outback, despite some rocky stretches. Continue along this dirt road to arrive at the Wire Mesa Trailhead.
Dispersed Camping Near Wire Mesa Trail
Surrounded by vast BLM land, finding a campsite here is straightforward. Venturing down Main Street, you’ll notice numerous dirt roads branching off. Although signs prohibit camping within one mile of Main Street, you will find ample sites just beyond this limit on most roads.
Closest Camping to the Wire Mesa Trail
For those aiming to camp near the Wire Mesa Trailhead, you're in luck. No camping sites are available before the trailhead, but just past it, numerous spots begin to appear. These range from spacious areas with fire pits to smaller ones suitable for a car and tent. We advise driving to the road's end, where a large campsite with multiple fire pits offers stunning views and ample space. However, its proximity to the trailhead means you might greet some friendly mountain bikers during breakfast.
Popularity of Camping Near Wire Mesa
Our visits in the quieter months of January and February revealed other campers, though sites remained accessible. The area likely sees more visitors during peak months like April and May, but the abundance of sites ensures availability. If sites near the trailhead are full, additional campsites are available just off the nearby dirt roads.
Mountain Biking Wire Mesa Trail
In February 2024, I tackled the Wire Mesa Trail on a Specialized Camber Comp, which proved ideal for this trail's blend of technical challenges and flowy sections, not to mention the stunning vistas.
Distance and Difficulty
The 7.4-mile loop of the Wire Mesa Trail caters to intermediate riders, featuring numerous rocky sections that add a technical edge, though less so than other local trails such as Gooseberry Mesa. I rode counterclockwise, finding the ascents challenging but manageable, with few sections requiring dismounting.
Fellow Riders on Wire Mesa
The trail enjoys popularity among mountain bikers and hikers alike, yet even during busy times, interactions remain courteous, and the trail does not feel overcrowded. This camaraderie enhances the experience for everyone on the trail.
Zion National Park Views from the Trail
The panoramic views along Wire Mesa Trail are truly breathtaking, with Zion National Park prominently on display. Don’t forget to stop and capture these moments with some photos.
